[For Karen]
Oct. 29th, 2011 02:55 amWhen Pepper had first proposed the idea of a boutique to Karen and Mary Jane, it had seemed to her more a hobby than a genuine vocation. Even on the island, her keen eye had always kept her in fashion, but her skills had always been applied to less fanciful areas. The boutique was a dalliance, a community service.
At least, that was what she'd anticipated.
At some point between the boutique's opening and now, it had evolved into an oasis. Incredibly personal, calm and orderly, the elegant racks and tables felt right, and there were moments when Pepper genuinely felt as if she could breathe a bit more easily there. For once in her life, she wasn't rushing from place to place, but just enjoying where she was.
The bulk of the time she and Karen spent in the boutique was filled sorting the latest harvests from the clothes box, and that was what they were doing today, standing side by side at a table in the back of the shop, sifting and judging. Not everything that seemed like a good idea initially made its way onto the sales floor.
"I hope whoever ends up with these understands what a wrench it is not taking them home with me," Pepper remarked as she set aside a pair of heels. She was beginning to run out of room in her closet.
